ICONS OF DESIRE brings the legendary work of Tom of Finland back to Amsterdam through a unique collaboration between RoB Gallery and the Tom of Finland Foundation, celebrating queer art, desire, and cultural history.

ICONS OF DESIRE: Tom of Finland Foundation x RoB Gallery

This summer, RoB Gallery presents ICONS OF DESIRE, a collaboration with Tom of Finland Foundation that reconnects Amsterdam with one of the most influential chapters in queer erotic art. The exhibition brings together original works by Tom of Finland alongside pieces by artists including Nigel Kent, Bastille, Bill Ward, and Erwin Olaf, drawn from the archives of both RoB Amsterdam and the Tom of Finland Foundation. Many of these works have not been exhibited in Amsterdam since the original RoB Gallery closed its doors in the 1990s.

A Shared History

The connection between RoB Gallery and Tom of Finland goes back more than forty years. Founded by Robert Meijer, RoB Gallery became one of Europe's most important platforms for male erotic art and queer visual culture. During the 1980s, the gallery exhibited Tom of Finland's work in Amsterdam, helping introduce his groundbreaking imagery to European audiences.

Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) transformed queer visual culture through his iconic depictions of confident, hypermasculine men. At a time when homosexuality was still heavily stigmatized, his drawings offered a radically positive vision of desire, identity, and self-expression. Today, his influence extends far beyond queer culture into contemporary art, photography, fashion, and popular culture.

Desire, Identity, and Cultural Memory

With ICONS OF DESIRE, these histories return to Amsterdam. More than a retrospective, the exhibition explores how images of masculinity, fantasy, and desire have shaped queer identity across generations. By bringing together historical works, archival material, and contemporary perspectives, the exhibition celebrates both the artistic legacy of Tom of Finland and the pioneering role RoB Gallery played in making erotic art visible within the cultural landscape of Amsterdam.
